Todorov's Narrative Theory

During this lesson we used Todorov's narrative theory to plan for our psychological thriller. Whereby instead of a beginning, middle and end, it is broken up into 5 parts:

The equilibrium - The opening introduction to a character and setting the scene for the plot

Disruption - The introduction of an intrusion to the main plot

Recognition of Disruption - The character finds a way to deal with the disruption

Attempt to repair Disruption - The main action takes place (character overcomes the disruption)

Reinstatement of Equilibrium - The character reaches the finale of the plot

Applying Todorov's Narrative Theory:

Equilibrium - The setting and main character are revealed in the suburban setting.

Disruption - Stress and paranoia build up through daily hassels at work etc.

Recognition of Disruption - The main character turns to drugs and alcohol to deal with the stress

Attempt to repair Disruption - After paranoia and anger take over, the character finds himself taking violent actions against innocent civillians.

Reinstatement of Equilibrium - The character results to taking his own life due to pressure and stress from his superiors.
